Spring Winds Usher Brantley Top Honors!
By: Alex Garoutte, Kickapoo High School Angler
LAKE OF THE OZARKS-A cold spring morning gave way to sunny skies and high winds at the second tournament of the Solo Pro series at PB-2. In fact, going to their spots was not an issue, but coming back against the high winds proved to be a challenge to all the anglers.
Joe Brantley weighed in a five fish limit of 20.2 lbs, which gave him 1st place honors. Brantley stated that, “the bite throughout the day was very slow for him”. In fact, he said that “he only had 6 keeper bites that he put in the boat”. He fished mainly the Pearson area and finished in the Grand Glaize arm. The water temperature for him reached 54 degrees. Brantley caught all his keeper bass with a swimbait on an underspin in about 5 feet of water. It didn’t matter the type of bank he fished, he just had to cover a lot of water.
Blake Felix brought a five fish limit to the scales that weighed 19.21 lbs. This put him in 2nd place. Felix had no trouble finding fish stating that, “he boated 21 keepers and they were all caught in about a foot of water”. Blake ran quite a ways up towards the dam to find warmer water, which reached 55-56 degrees. Felix fished with a 5/16 oz. jig all around the backs of boat docks.
Jimmy Davis Jr. took 3rd place with a five fish limit of 19.14 lbs. The day began well with catching the first keeper on his 3rd pitch with a jig, but after that he couldn’t get a bite. Three hours later, with no success with a jig, he switched to a Spring Craw Rock Crawler. Then the bite was on. He mainly fished the Grand Glaize arm in about 12 feet of water throwing 45 degrees at a chunk rock bank.
